Veto Pen Ends the Session as Governor Dayton’s Lame Duck Begins

On Wednesday, May 23rd, Gov. Dayton kept his promise of vetoing two pieces of critical legislation.

On the chopping block was the supplemental budget bill and a tax conformity/reform bill that included $225M funding for school districts.

Without Minnesota conforming its tax law with changes made at the Federal level, we will all suffer a more complicated process and the loss of a number of deductions from our income taxes when filing next year.

We can and should blame both sides. It didn’t help when Gov. Dayton demanded an additional $138 million in funding for school districts, with just three weeks left in the session. Education is fully 30% of Minnesota’s budget.

Gov. Dayton has stated he will not call a special session. The legacy he leaves is an 11% percent increase in spending, 7 straight surpluses (this last one was $329 million), and no tax relief for the citizens or businesses of Minnesota.

Get ready for November!
